Congenital penile curvature affects men more commonly than is thought. It is accepted that the actual incidence of developmental deformity in the penis, which is characterized by curvature, is much higher, with an incidence of 8-10%. This deformity, which can be noticed by the parents in the early period with careful observation, mostly by the patient with the first erection, can cause both psychological problems and make sexual intercourse physically impossible as it progresses.
Congenital penile curvature, which can be difficult to detect in infancy unless careful observation is made, makes its presence felt when boys enter puberty and experience their first erection. Because congenital penile curvature is caused by developmental anomalies in the tube structures that fill with blood during erection and provide erection, and awareness of this problem is usually provided by experiencing an erection experience. Congenital penile curvature, which does not cause a serious problem and does not need to be treated due to the low degree of curvature in some people, makes it difficult to have sexual intercourse if the degree of curvature is high, causes women to feel pain during sexual intercourse, and can cause psychological trauma in men, leading to sexual dysfunctions such as premature ejaculation and erectile dysfunction.
The explanations I have made above about congenital penile curvature are not the only scenarios that can be encountered. This health problem, which can negatively affect the development of the penis during infancy and childhood, can also lead to shortness of the penis. From whichever angle it is approached, congenital penile curvature should be considered as an important anomaly that requires parents to be careful.
Congenital penile curvature can rarely be observed in infancy boys. It can take many years to notice the curvature of the penis, especially if the degree of curvature is low. Curvatures up to 20-30 degrees are not considered a significant obstacle to the continuity of penis development and the sustainability of sexual functions, but the degree of curvature may increase with advancing age. Therefore, genital examination should not be neglected when babies are bediapered or urinating.
There is no drug or exercise program that is effective in the treatment of congenital curvature of the penis. The only method of this anatomical problem treatment is "penile plication" surgery, which I will soon elaborate on. The need for surgical methods to correct penile curvature is an issue that causes anxiety for parents. However, it should be known that congenital penile curvature does not always need to be treated. Penile plication surgery comes into prominence as the only alternative when the curvature of the penis is more than 30 degrees, when it causes pain and prevents penile development.
Penile plication is one of the most important surgical techniques used in the treatment of congenital penile curvature. This operation, whose long-term success is confirmed by the medical authorities, is carried out under operating room conditions. During surgery, which can be performed safely by experienced urology and andrologists who are fully familiar with penis anatomy, corrective stitches are performed in contrast to the curved part of the tube wall that causes penile curvature. During surgery, the veins and nerves in the area should be separated without stitches to the tube walls.
Penile curvature may be congenital, or it may occur as a result of hard plaque formation in the sheath surrounding the tubes in later ages. This health problem, which we define as Peyronie's disease, causes complaints such as pain during erection, curvature of the penis and erectile dysfunction, similar to congenital penile curvature. The plaques formed on the penis due to Peyronie's disease are removed by Peyronie's surgery, and then the penis is straightened with patch materials placed instead of the plaque. When Peyronie's disease reaches the chronic stage, surgery comes up as the only treatment method, drug treatment is inconclusive.
